You know how people tend to eat more around the holidays? Well, I was pretty good this year, and didn't overeat at Thanksgiving or Christmas. Then again, we weren't visiting my family for either of those holidays. Instead, we're going to be visiting them during the next few weeks. It may not be Christmas, but that's not to say that there won't be goodies around the house, or that my dad won't order some delicious Italian cookies from the bakery. Yum! I guess my New Year's diet will have to wait.

I recently got back in contact with a few old friends from college through one of those reconnecting Web sites. These particular friends were fellow English majors, and it just so happened that we were in quite a few classes together, including a course in Literary Criticism & Theory. I haven't discussed literary theory in several years, and these guys boggle my mind! I remember sitting in class with them and thinking "What does any of this have to do with tea in China?" It's funny the things you find that you've missed; as the old saying goes, "you don't know what you've got until it's gone." Don't get me wrong--I'm glad to have graduated from college, and to have grown and matured. But I'm also inspired by the rekindling of thoughts that haven't reached the forefront of my brain in several years. I wrote weird, obscure, not-quite-pretentious poetry all the time in college, and I haven't written much since then. My creativity has been inspired by these artsy-fartsy discussions, and I feel like writing some obscure poetry once more, just for fun. So, cherish the little things, the things you take for granted, and even grow bored of. I can assure you, they'll probably come back to inspire you when you least expect it.

Keep writing,

Julia Temlyn

Tramps Like Us, Baby We Were Born to Write, by Kevin Kilgarriff

Music is a part of our lives.  We’ve all got a soundtrack that’s taken us from moment to moment as we trudge through our long days.  Songs that remind us of both good times and bad times when they come on the radio.  Some songs hold more meaning than others, and sometimes that meaning comes from the actual artist.  For my Mom it was Neil Diamond.  For me, it’s Bruce Springsteen.  His songs helped me through life and continue to do so.  The ease with which I can identify with his lyrics is uncanny. He effortlessly puts me inside his stories using a storytelling ability that is second to none.  He uses words to their fullest extent, calling on only the strongest, and most desperate sounding phrases.  Bruce paints a picture that could hang in any of the world’s museums.  If only one could find a way to materialize it. The Idea Catcher: The Word Collector, by Yvonne Russell

Some people collect teapots. Others collect first edition books.  Okay, I’ll admit it. My house is full of what I like to call “eclectic collectables.”  My husband is a patient man, but I sometimes catch him casting a surreptitious sideways glance at my teetering treasures, with a “wish we could clear that space” type of look.  I jokingly remind him of his friend, Jim’s philosophy  - “If you haven’t found a use for it, you haven’t kept it long enough.”

That’s the way I feel about words. Go Jim!! I am a word collector. Read more...

Freelancing: An Apprenticeship for Life by Susan M. Thompson

Even now, with the clients and published works I have in place, I still feel the fear gripping my heart. It tries to suck every bit of positive energy from my body and leave me with an empty shell. Only, the fear, gets so far, and gets kicked aside by the super-ego. The voice inside of me that says this is so worthwhile and yes I can do it! Read more...
