4. READING GROUP: THE ARTIST'S WAY
===================================
Some of us here at Writers Remember have decided
to go through the popular writing course
The
Artist's Way together as a group on the
message board. As of now, week 7 has been
posted, but our editor has just begun Chapters 1
and 2, so it's never too late! The beauty of
doing it this way is that even if you didn’t
start with us, you can start at any time and
join right in! We welcome any and all of you to
join us as we rediscover our artist selves and
break out of the patterns that hold us back.

6. ARTICLE: Come Write With Me: Pictures &
Postcards, by Barbara Deming
===================================
Several years ago I began to teach memoir
writing classes to the elderly. It all began as
a fluke. I had a book to promote, sent out press
releases to everybody and God, and did set up
some book signings and talks on writing. One of
these was at an apartment complex for retirees;
I address the monthly Ladies' Breakfast during
the month of April which just happens to also be
Women’s History Month. My talk and my book were
a success. The activities director asked me if I
would get together a plan for teaching residents
how to write their memoirs. I call the class
“You Can Write Too” and it is in its third year.
The first session of my classes is always a
get-to-know-you, what-you-want-to-write-about,
and what-can-I-do-for-you sort of thing. At the
end of each class, no matter what I am teaching,
I give my students a prompt or starter for the
next session. I never expect that everyone will
write about this prompt; there are members who
are already into their writing and want to
continue with the flow. This first assignment
is always the same because it produces amazing
results: find an old photograph from your past
that intrigues you. Write about it.

7. ARTICLE: Have You Decided Yet?, by Gary
Hibberd
===================================
How many times have your heard someone (or
perhaps yourself) say, “I’d like to write a book
about [insert topic here]”? The normal response
to this is a warm smile and a knowing nod. But
let’s look at this for a second; You'd/they’d
like to write a book? Well, I’d
like
to swim across the Atlantic Ocean. I’d also
like to learn how to speak Italian. But
aren’t we merely stating preferences here?
However, if I
decided to swim the
Atlantic Ocean the next question you’d ask is
how am I preparing to do this? If I
decided
to learn to speak Italian you might ask "Why,"
and then "Where am I going to learn?"
The difference between like and
decide is that one is merely an expression
of desire, whilst the other requires action!
Once you’ve decided to write a book the
next important step obviously is choosing your
subject matter.

8. PATTIE'S PROMPTS
===================================
Begin a List Journal
Lists. We make them, we use them, we throw them
away, we forget them on the kitchen table… well,
maybe that’s only me and my grocery list! There
is just something about list-making that gets me
going. I love making lists and crossing things
off them; it gives me a needed sense of
accomplishment in the crazy world we live in.
I got the idea for a list journal from my friend
Valerie, who told me she kept a journal simply
of lists. I was intrigued. She gave me a
suede-covered journal, and I began my own list
journal. In it I began a few simple lists:
books I want to read, movies I’d like to see,
personal goals, writing goals... that sort of
thing.
Ilene Segalove and Paul Bob Velick have two
books published called List Your Self:
Listmaking as the Way to Self-Discovery and More
List Your Self. I highly recommend them for
occasional perusal, because sometimes there’s
nothing like making a good list!
Here are a few ideas culled from their pages:
List your personal mottos or inspired words you
want to live by.
List what you do to snap out of a bad mood.
List the people you’d like to smack around, yell
at, or simply tell off.
List the greatest loves of your life.
List the menu for your Last Supper.
And finally,
List the stuff on your to-do list that is
probably a waste of your time and resources.
