1. From the Editor's Desk
===================================
Greetings!
Writers Remember had the joy of being
featured at
WritingSpark and Anne Wayman's
The Golden Pencil recently! Check out
the great features each site wrote up about
us!
Summer's over, and school is back in
session. The theme of this issue is that
we're always learning-- that's the important
thing about being a writer! So, don't forget
your homework-- write, write, write! And
read!
Please join us as we journey through
The Artist's Way-- it's not too
late! (In fact, due to some issues in my
life, I've only just begun to work through
the book.) The Artist's Way is one of the
most popular and powerful creative writing
tools, and we're thrilled to be learning
from it and sharing together. The sessions are set up so that
people can work through it at their own
pace. Just visit
The Artist's Way forum, located at
Writers Remember! We look forward to seeing
you there!
Enjoy this issue!
Keep writing,
Julia Temlyn

===================================
Some of us here at Writers Remember have

The Artist's Way together as a
group on the message board. The beauty of
doing it this way is that even if you didn’t
start with us, you can start at any time and
join right in! We welcome any and all of
you to join us as we rediscover our artist
selves and break out of the patterns that
hold us back.

4. Article: School is Never Out of
Session, by Julia Temlyn
===================================
School is back in session, and not just
for the children. In fact, school is never out of session
for the writer! As
writers it is crucial that we always make a habit of practicing and
learning in order to become the very best writers we can be! How can
we learn to be better writers? The answer is simple enough—we must
do our homework. (I hear the groans now. Homework? Don’t
worry—this is the fun stuff!)
To be a writer one must regularly participate
in two activities: Writing and Reading.

5. Article: The Power of a Story: Musings
on Personal narrative & Truth, by Pattie
Reitz
===================================
One of my favorite kinds of writing to
teach was the personal narrative. In fact, when I had to prepare a
project for the Greater Kansas City Writing Project Summer
Institute, I chose “Personal Narratives in the Classroom.” There is
just something about reading someone’s story. Hearing someone’s
story. Rare is the person who does not enjoy hearing a good story.
The disturbance in the publishing world and
blogosphere over James Frey’s lies in his book A Million Little Pieces
has given me much to ponder. What makes a good
story? Why embellish the truth to make it more sensational, when the
truth itself is itself sensational?
I was reminded of the power of a story
recently...

6. Pattie's Prompts & Journaling Column:
Back to School Prompts & Begin a List
Journal
===================================
Back to School Prompts (Click
here for full article.)
It’s back to school time! Time for new
pencils, new notebooks, fresh starts. What better time than to use
some back-to-school prompts to liven up your journal and perhaps
take a stroll down memory lane for just a while.
These are prompts I used to use in my high
school classroom with great success. Give them a try and give
yourself a taste of back-to-school.
Describe what life at _____ High School would
be like if YOU were the principal.
If your teacher was gone for a week, who would
you like to be your substitute teacher? The sub can be any person,
living or dead, famous or not. Then tell me why you’d want this
person to be your teacher and what you might learn from him or her.
If you
could change your school’s mascot or colors, what would you change
them to and why? If you wouldn’t change them, explain why you think
they’re fine the way they are.Begin a List
Journal
(Click
here for full article.)
Lists. We make them, we use them, we
throw them away, we forget them on the kitchen table… well, maybe
that’s only me and my grocery list! There is just something about
list-making that gets me going. I love making lists and crossing
things off them; it gives me a needed sense of accomplishment in the
crazy world we live in.
I got the idea for a list journal from my
friend Valerie, who told me she kept a journal simply of lists. I
was intrigued. She gave me a suede-covered journal, and I began my
own list journal. In it I began a few simple lists: books I want to
read, movies I’d like to see, personal goals, writing goals... that
sort of thing.
Ilene Segalove and Paul Bob Velick have two
books published called List Your Self: Listmaking as the Way to Self-Discovery
and More List Your Self. I highly recommend them for occasional perusal, because
sometimes there’s nothing like making a good list!
Here are a few ideas culled from their pages:
List your personal mottos or inspired words you
want to live by.
List what you do to snap out of a bad mood.
List the people you’d like to smack around,
yell at, or simply tell off.
List the greatest loves of your life.
List the menu for your Last Supper.
And finally,
List the stuff on your to-do list that is
probably a waste of your time and resources.
More List Yourself books we recommend:
List Your Self: Listmaking as the Way to Self-Discovery
More List Your Self: Listmaking as the Way to Personal Discovery
List Your Creative Self: Listmaking as the Way to Unleash Your Creativity
List Your Self For Kids: Listmaking as Fun Way to Get to Know Yourself
List Your Self for Pregnancy: Listmaking As the Way to Self-Discovery for the Mother-To-Be
List Your Self for Parenting: Listmaking As the Way to Celebrate and Enrich Parenting
