The Inkwell Runneth Over With
Creativity
Soon after graduating from college,
Julia Temlyn realized that her dreams of starting a writing colony with friends
were a bit farfetched; instead, she sought to make a career out of writing,
becoming a freelance writer, editor, and proofreader. After several years of
freelancing, she likened it to selling her soul, by writing what paid the
bills and pleased the people, often forgetting to continue to hone her creative
talents.
It is for this reason that WritersRemember.com was created. Temlyn owns and
edits the combination Web site, newsletter, and forum for
writers worldwide. Rest assured, however, it is not just another writing site. Writers
Remember is unlike any other writers' Web site out there, because its focus is on discouraged writers, those who have a fervent passion
for the craft, but have been burnt out by the competitive nature which surrounds
it.
"Writers Remember was born out of something my mother asked
me once," says Julia, "regarding the similarities between myself and the heroine of one of my
favorite books, Little Women. She asked me, 'Do you ever feel a
bit like Jo March--writing what pleases others and pays the bills?'
Surprisingly, I realized that was exactly how I was feeling."
Just as Jo March, and her author-counterpart Louisa May
Alcott, wrote what pleased the newspapers and gossip columns over one hundred
years ago, so do many writers today, writing articles and content
for the internet, often compromising their values by deliberately
butchering the English language in the name of search engine optimization.
Writers may even write novels, stories, or articles that please others, but
feel no passion for what they've written.
It is understandable--making a living is important. However, Temlyn is
concerned for that which drives writers. Attempting to write for clips and quick cash,
are writers falling out of love with the writing process?
"I used to relish the glimpse of smudged ink on my
fingers--that was how Professor Bhaer recognized Jo March as a writer, from the
ink stains on her fingers. Now, my fingers get tired after hours
of typing," Temlyn says. "Perhaps we should take a few moments each
day to pick up
a pen and unleash our creativity."
Neither Jo nor Louisa May stopped writing what earned necessary
money, but they recognized that so much more lay within their hearts, waiting to
be written. Likewise, writers do not
have to stop writing what earns us the money we need. However, we do
need to balance our writing profession with a healthy dose of writing passion.
We must not forget what made us fall in love with writing, if we are to keep
from selling our writing souls.
The goal of Writers Remember is to share encouragement with writers all over the
world, male and female, and to have writers
share in return. Writers Remember will provide various resources which writers can identify with and apply to their lives. We hope you will join
us
in this creative endeavor.
