Writing Exercises

Five Minutes with a Blank Screen.

1. Turn off your computer monitor (or, if you have a laptop, stick a sheet of paper over the laptop screen).
2. Set a timer for 5 minutes.
3. Start writing. Write whatever comes into your head. Don't think--just write. Don't stop hitting the keys. Type as fast as you can.
4. Look at the results, and feel free to post them on our forum. Do not edit, not even for typos.

The results can be quite interesting. It's amazing what can come out of you. Want more? Try it for longer than 5 minutes!

Write a Haiku a Day.

Though this Japanese form of poetry is traditionally written with an emphasis on nature, you can write on just about any topic using this meter.
The Western adaptation of a haiku consists of three (3) lines.

The first line consists of five (5) syllables.
The second line consists of seven (7) syllables.
The third (3) line consists of five (5) syllables.

This is a short writing exercise that can be completed on a daily basis. Feel free to participate and share in our forum!
