Free Writing Residency — Call for Midwest Authors

What an opportunity to inspire the creative mind — a writing colony!

The residency is free insofar as lodging and food are covered. We are seeking submissions from Midwest authors for the inaugural season. More info can be found at www.writersintheheartland.org. Below is the official announcement; feel free to share it with fellow writers and colleagues:

Writers in The Heartland is now taking applications for its inaugural season. Writers in the Heartland is a writing colony for creative writers in all genres. The colony is located in Gilman, Illinois, approximately 2 hours south of Chicago. It is located on a beautiful 30-acre wooded site with lakes and walking paths. A limited number of one-week residencies are available for September 4-11 and October 2-9. All lodging and food is included. For the inaugural year, we are only accepting applications from writers living in the Midwest region of the United States.

Applications must be received by April 15, 2009, to be considered. Decisions will be announced by July 1st. For further information about applying to Writers in the Heartland, see our website www.writersintheheartland.org, or contact us at writersintheheartland@gmail.com.

Best,
Writers in the Heartland

What does “The residency is free insofar as lodging and food are covered.” mean? What other costs are there?

This post was something that we at Writers Remember thought might interest writers, but we are in no way affiliated with Writers in the Heartland.

You should direct any questions to the e-mail address listed in the post: writersintheheartland@gmail.com.

This is just me talking, but I don’t know of any other costs, aside from your own personal cost of getting to the residency itself and any personal needs. I’d take it to mean what it says, that the residency itself is free, since lodging and food are the main components. It sounds as though there are no other actual costs.

Also, I’d recommend you visit the website’s About page for more information, including:

Writers are housed in The Writers Building that contains five private bedrooms (and bath?), a kitchen and a conference room. Three meals a day are provided in the main dining room, although writers may prefer to take food back to their rooms. All meals are mostly vegetarian, low in fat and sodium. With the exception of mealtimes, the residency enforces a non-communication policy up to six o’clock p.m. to allow writers the necessary privacy to concentrate on their work.

We hope that helps, and that you find the answer you’re looking for.
